File Transfer Protocol
File Transfer Protocol stands for FTP, which is the language/conduit for file transfers on web servers. Basically if you have web space, you’re going to use FTP to get your files there.
Right now I use Core FTP LE. I’m not terribly impressed or happy with it, but it works (most of the time) and I don’t really need anything more.
Apparently Notepad++ has built-in FTP functionality, but that won’t work with all the files you’ll need to upload, so it’s best to get an FTP client too. If your web host has a web-based FTP — usually a web page you visit, browse and upload your files — ditch that and get your own FTP client.
Setting up your FTP client shouldn’t be too tough. Find out your web host’s FTP server (this information should be readily available from them), oftentimes it’s just your main URL. Use your web host provided username and password and you’re all set.
If your FTP client didn’t deposit you in the root (which is the directory your visitors first “see”), you can navigate to it via a folder usually titled public_html.
Colors
What? Colors, you say? I need software for colors?
Well, no. No, you don’t. But it’s a good idea for two reasons. First, most people wing it with colors. Um, I want red and orange. Any two will do. That doesn’t cut it. Second, it can be tough keeping track of your colors and it’s nice to have somewhere you can store them all.
I use Color Schemer Studio and I love it. It lets me chose a color (or steal one should I find one I like) and then select compliments and variations of it and store them all together. It’s wonderful. Unfortunately, unlike most of the programs I’m putting in this article, Color Schemer isn’t free. They do have a demo version you can try then purchase if you like it.
I also occasionally use Desktop Color Finder which uses Adobe Air. It’s just a nice way to get started with a color or five that look nice and go together. You do need to have Adobe Air installed before you download it.
